Every morning students will turn in their homework assignments. Assignments should be…
Written legibly
Completed with QUALITY & EFFORT
Completely finished
“Pink slips” will be given when assignments don’t meet expectations. Unacceptable/incomplete assignments will be made up at home. Students will have the weekend until MONDAY to turn in all missing work.
Students with 3 or more consistent missing/incomplete/incorrect homework assignments will receive a notice (PINK SLIP) sent home which will be stapled into their planner. “Pink slips” must be signed and returned. Student will also need to write a composition to explain why assignments are not being completed and what will be done next time. Frequent missing assignments could result in the child not being able to participate in certain class incentives.
If pink slips sent home do not return to class and missing assignments become persistent, please expect a phone call or possibly a 3 way conference to identify what the issue may be and what solutions we can come up with together to ensure your child is successful.
AVID Student Planner
The planner should be where students refer to for homework. The daily homework assignments will be posted online, but are subject to change. Homework should take approximately 90 minutes every evening to complete (unless there is unfinished work from class which may take longer). Parents are encouraged to discuss homework assignments with their child as this will foster a deeper understanding of the material.
Students are expected to have homework completed and turned in on time everyday. Failure to turn in homework will result in getting a pink slip. Three pink slips for failure to turn in homework will result in a 3 paragraph writing composition (reflection), staying in for recess to complete, and a call home to see what we can do to help you child be successful.
Example of Daily Homework *Subject to change
Reading Response Log
Math (Stepping Stones)
ELA/Social Studies/Science
Please note that time spent on homework will fluctuate due to the children's individual differences.

Here are some tips for helping your child with homework:
- Have a weekly meeting with your child to plan out homework. I will update the students “homework” page weekly. Please use this as a guide to keep up with tests and projects. Use your child's AVID Student Planner to set a schedule for the week.
- Set a timer for your child; have him/her estimate how long each assignment will take and set the timer for that amount of time. Timing each assignment helps to keep the child on task.
- If homework is taking more than 1.5 hours per night, please let me know and we will figure out what exactly is the problem and how we can come up with a solution.
- Review your child’s homework and ensure it is completed and sign planner daily.
- Ensure your child has given you any forms, flyers, or communication notes from school/teacher.
- Set aside a quiet, properly lit place for homework to be done. Provide necessary materials for your child to do homework (pencils, ruler, etc.).
- Establish a daily routine that includes homework time.
- Guide and encourage your child to do best in homework, but do not do the work for the child.
- Support your child and communicate concerns with the teacher.
- Talk with your child and discuss what he/she is learning or trying to learn.
